tensor: Explained: Google Tensor chips for Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro


Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro are here. And the biggest highlight of the new phones is the company’s system-on-a-chip (SOC) that powers them. Much like Apple’s A-series mobile chips, this is Google’s attempt to bind together its software with custom-tuned hardware.
Google has positioned Tensor as an AI powerhouse, giving its new phones better hardware for image processing and voice recognition.
Tensor chips: What’s inside
Google’s SoC is a 5nm eight-core design broken down into big, medium and small cores. It has two ARM Cortex-X1 cores running at 2.8GHz, compared to Qualcomm’s flagship Snapdragon 888 chip, which only has a single X1 core.
It also features two Cortex A76 cores running at 2.25GHz, as well as four 1.8GHz A55 cores as the “small” bits. The Tensor also has a Mali-G78 graphics core, which you’ll also find on other flagship Android phones.

Google introduced its always-on voice commands with Moto X which was a step up towards ambient computing. Google is still focused on this feature with the Tensor chip.
The new SoC allows the Pixel 6 to translate videos and messages quickly with its Live Translate feature. It is useful for your voice to type, edit and send messages.
Google claims that the Tensor chip will perform around 80 percent faster than the Pixel 5 and will work without consuming much battery life.

Furthermore, Google claims that Tensor also gives the Pixel 6 an extra layer of security. It’ll work together with the Titan M2 chip in the phone to protect against malware and other potential attacks. We can expect more security hardware in other Android phones in the coming days.
Tensor appears to offer fast speed and a number of forward-thinking AI features. If Google is successful, maybe Tensor could make its way over to devices from other brands.
